Great insights on technology transfer at the site visit at CERN
Leiden, 27 October 2016
The participants of the CERN site visit were welcomed by Dr. Giovanni Anelli, the head of the Knowledge Transfer Office of the Organisation, who gave on overview of CERN knowledge transfer activities. Presentations by CERN experts focused on the important areas where CERN technologies are transferred, typically medical and space applications. Specific knowledge transfer approaches like the CERN Open Hardware license and knowledge transfer from scientific collaborations were also explained.
At the end of the presentations, David Mazur, deputy head of the KTO started an interesting discussion on the controversial use of patents as a tool for knowledge transfer. The visit ended with the visit of a CERN accelerator facility and the CERN microcosm giving the participants a fascinating view on the way CERN is performing its research and the leading edge technologies developed for this purpose.
